As we get colder with Australia’s miserable weather, it’s a relief that we can enjoy the summer holiday movies that are coming from the US. What is more “Summer” than action, comedy and drama at the beach, with the long awaited “Baywatch”?!
Based on the popular television series from the 90’s, “Baywatch” is directed by Seth Gordon (“Identity Thief” and “Horrible Bosses”) and like the series, it focuses on a group of lifeguards who seem to do a lot more than just save swimmers in trouble!
Dwayne Johnson (AKA wrestler “The Rock”) plays Mitch Buchanan, (David Hasselhoff’s role in the TV series) the leader of the Baywatch crew. With fellow lifeguards CJ (Kelly Rohrbach in Pamela Anderson’s TV role) and Stephanie (Ilfenesh Hadera) he trains new lifeguard recruits Summer (Alexandra Daddario) and Ronnie (Jon Bass). They are joined by disgraced former Olympic gold winning swimmer, smart-Alec Matt Brody (Zac Efron).
In between their lifesaving, this time the Baywatch crew are up against glamorous criminal Victoria Leeds who intends to bribe and take over the bay for her drug smuggling movement.
While Baywatch is full of action and glamour, I think the most appealing aspects this movie is the comedy. Mitch (Johnson) and Brady (Efron) are continually at odds (naturally!) and you cannot help but roll with laughter at all the sarcastic names Mitch (Johnson) refers to Brady (Efron) with, when he acknowledges him. “Malibu Ken”, “Bieber”, “N-Sync” and “Jonas Brother” are just a few!
Naturally there are cameos from the stars of the original “Baywatch” series, with David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson making appearances and while this is no “Schindler’s List” or “Shawshank Redemption” type of drama, it is definitely a hot action drama and comedy to warm up our dark grey winter!
