Find a muse! I take a lot of inspiration from people on Instagram. I look at their outfits and what I like about them and try to add some of their style into my own. I love Leandra Medine Cohen’s style and often use her as a reference when I am struggling with those days when I don’t know what to.

Add a splash of colour! You don’t need to go all out but by adding some colour to an otherwise monochromatic wardrobe or a new colour can add some freshness to your current look. Too scared? If you love black and white, consider navy or a muted colour like khaki.

Finally, mix it up. Do you always wear a heel with a particular outfit? Change it up by adding a white sneaker (a shoe that practically goes with everything) and will now add a casual cool factor to that outfit. Or go the other way and slip on a statement heel with an otherwise casual outfit.

First, I invest in quality, well-made pieces that are more on the timeless side. Not necessarily a basic or boring garment, but also nothing trendy or ‘fast fashion’. When you have your high-end staples, you can easily translate these pieces into new looks season after season, either paired with less expensive and more current trend items or put together with new accessories.

I usually have a clutch or purse I carry for a season, a new necklace or ring of the moment, or even a new pair of shoes. I also buy prints that aren’t too bold or over the top, as I get sick of anything too loud after a season or two. Keeping your wardrobe colours to a more condensed colour palette helps, as you know you can pair everything together and still keep your look polished and current without having to change much.

For women, a great way to refresh an outfit is to change up your accessories. Adding different or trend jewellery will make your outfit feel more current or a belt will change the shape of your outfit and give it a new look. If it’s clothing that you’re after, a great way to invest in new clothes without breaking the bank is to visit your local vintage stores. Quite often you can find well-kept clothing that is either classic or has come back in fashion for a fraction of the price.

For men, investing in a great jacket in a neutral colour is always a good idea, particularly something like a bomber that can be dressed up with a shirt and chinos or dressed down with a t-shirt and jeans. New shoes are also a great way to refresh an outfit, sneakers can be worn casually or to dress down a suit and desert boots are versatile for day and night.

Reinventing your style is both an easy and hard process, it’s less of an update and more of an elevation. The easiest way to do it is to put yourself out of your comfort zone and try new things that excite you and make you feel good.

Remember fashion is what you wear and style is how you wear it. Most times, reinvention of one’s style is done by luck and is a new take on a previous look you have have worn, but to accurately update yourself it’s about reassessing what makes you feel happy now.

Upcycling is HUGE right now! You could literally upcycle anything. For the girls specifically, take an old shirt add some beads, lace, jewels and turn it into a t-shirt dress. For the fellas, cut up some old shirts and sew onto vintage jacket.

Men, while we’re on the subject, if you want to look edgier but don’t want to get tattoos or shave your hair, just add accessories, heaps of rings or even a skeleton bracelet and match with any outfit.
