Not Her Last Supper
With the 2018 New York Met Gala theme of Catholic Tastes bringing out religious overtones in styling and imagery, the doors have been thrown wide open for designers to enter this new domain for fashion. Enter emerging couture designer Penny Lim. Lim’s label Sindecisive is appropriately named for these fashion times.
Sindecisive started out as a ready-to-wear label back in early 2017. The name derives from the designer’s indecisiveness, and her love of going against the grain. Hence the word ‘sin’. It was working on her graduate collection in 2017 that Penny realised how much she loves couture. “The creative work behind every single dress inspired me to keep going. I never got bored. Paul Vasileff (Paolo Sebastian) was my mentor for my graduate collection. The inspiration and advice he gave me was priceless. At the end of 2017, I closed my ready-to-wear label and decided to pursue my love for couture.”
Penny’s Afterthought collection is inspired by her grandmother. “My grandmother worked hard all her life. Losing her father at a young age was not easy, they were poor and relied on his income. So my grandmother quit school to help my great-grandmother with the chores of the household. She never had time to sew. She never learnt how to sew. There was no man in her household, so both she and her mother had to take on that role for their family. My grandmother has taught me everything. She was the one who brought me up while my parents were busy working. I owe my life to her.”
The collection consists of six dresses. Each dress represents one stage of Penny’s life. “The collection line up goes up a dark navy to blue to beige, symbolising the maturity of my grandmother. What is significant about the way I designed this collection is that every little detail means something. Afterthought was designed with my grandmother in mind. The dresses are her.”
Styled by creative photographer Nicole Fang, Sindecisive’s Afterthought range has been photographed as a play on Michalangeo’s masterpiece, The last Supper. In Sindecisive’s case, the shoot is named Not Her Last Supper.
Stylist Photographer Nicole Fang had this to say about creating the visual for Sindecisive:
“The Last Supper was created by Leonardo da Vinci, an aesthetic exploration of psychological expression. Da Vinci depicted that fateful moment when it was revealed that one amongst the twelve was going to betray Jesus Christ.
With Sindecisive, using Penny’s main inspiration – her grandmother – with her graduate collection, this particular work intended to showcase a similar range of emotions her grandmother had demonstrated through the various phases of her life. Transiting from her father’s home to her husband’s home, and subsequently raising children and grandchildren with heavy religious themes represented in the model’s head pieces and movements.”
A new Sindecisive A/W range will drop in February 2019.
